Airlines Refuse to Allow Sick Girl to Travel to China

by Rajshri on Jul 1 2008 3:56 PM

A 5-year-old girl from Kentucky was prevented from flying to China for experimental stem-cell treatments by two airlines, who said she was too sick to make the journey.

The girl in question is Hailey Goranflo who has a rare condition called Late Infantile Batten Disease. Air Canada and Air China refused to transport her to Beijing after a doctor in Vancouver did not sign a waiver.

"I'm completely distraught," her mother, Miranda Goranflo told The Courier-Journal “I cannot believe we've come this far and we have to come home."

However Air Canada told CTV that it was in the right. "Our first priority is always to ensure the safety of all of our customers and the crew onboard our flight," said spokeswoman Angela Mah. "We will always err on the side of safety and caution."
