One of the German shepherds brought in specially from Islamabad as a part of sniffer-dog squad ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani's next visit to Karachi, is reportedly suffering from maggots, a kind of worm which multiplies very fast and could prove fatal in not treated within time.

The dog was secretly admitted in a veterinary hospital for treatment after maggot worms and pus was seen oozing out of its right ear.

According to sources in the Federal Investigation Unit (FIU), Max and Maggie, the two German shepherds each about two years old, are trained to sniff for bombs and other explosive materials, reported the Daily Times.

The dogs have been kept in the custody of the FIU Karachi, where on Tuesday morning all of a sudden, the black-brown Max was seen to be suffering from ear infection and pus was flowing from the infected ear.

"Maggots are a type of worm and are very dangerous. Maggots multiply very fast. A single maggot in a wound on any animal can multiply a hundredfold within 24 hours, which often proves fatal," said the on-duty doctor at the veterinary hospital, requesting anonymity.
