Eye Lid Problems - Chalazion

Chalazion

There are several oil secreting glands in the eye lids. The oil secreted by these glands help smooth movement of the lids over the eye ball. The oil layer also helps to prevent evaporation of the tear film. Due to blockage of these glands the secretions get pent up within the lid and eventually form a rounded lump within the lid. Repeated rubbing of the lids can be one of the reasons of the gland blockage(3 Trusted Source

Repeated chalazions are caused due to uncorrected refractive error and acne rosacea.

In most cases, the chalazion drains spontaneously if hot compresses are applied to the eyelid for 10-15 minutes, 2-4 times a day for a few days. In cases where the chalazion does not drain, it can be drained surgically under local anesthesia in the clinic.

If left untreated it can press on the cornea and can cause astigmatism leading to blurring of vision. It can also be a cosmetic blemish(4 Trusted Source
