Osteoporosis means "porous bone" and it is a bone condition in which the bone becomes weak resulting in bone fragility and increases the risk of fracture. It is caused by the hormonal changes or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. As the bone weakens they are more likely to break.
Osteoporosis occurs when the rate of bone loss is higher when compared to the rate of bone formation. Osteoporosis can develop at any age, both men and women are equally affected. Most common sites of osteoporotic fracture are the hip, spine, shoulder and wrist.
Osteoporosis affects million of people around the world. Osteoporosis is seen more frequently in Asian and non-Hispanic men and women. Osteoporosis is called the "silent disease" because they do not develop any symptoms until the person gets a fracture.
Lifestyle - There is no cure for osteoporosis, but it can be prevented by some lifestyle changes like regular exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, dancing to improve the bone density and strengthen the muscles.
Diet - People with osteoporosis are highly recommended to take milk, yogurt, salmon, dried figs and foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. Calcium can be consumed as supplements with the physician’s recommendation.
