Why is Trimethobenzamide Prescribed? (Indications)
This medication is an antiemetic agent, prescribed for nausea and vomiting. It works by decreasing activity in the area of the brain that causes nausea and vomiting.
When should Trimethobenzamide not to be taken? (Contraindications)
Hypersensitivity.What is the dosage of Trimethobenzamide?
Adult-IM- The recommended dose is 2 mL (200 mg) 2 to 3 times per day.
PO- 250 to 300 mg 3 to 4 times a day.
How should Trimethobenzamide be taken?
It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.
It comes as a suppository to insert through rectum.
What are the warnings and precautions for Trimethobenzamide?
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of brain disease (eg, encephalitis), dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, fever, diarrhea, Reye syndrome, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.* It may cause drowsiness or dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
* Avoid alcohol consumption.
What are the side effects of Trimethobenzamide?
Central Nervous System - Coma, convulsions, depression of mood, disorientation, dizziness, drowsiness and headache.Miscellaneous - Blood dyscrasias, blurring of vision, diarrhea, jaundice, muscle cramps and spasticity.
