Why is Mestranol and Norethindrone Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a combination of 2 hormones namely estrogen and progestogen, used as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. It causes changes in cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.

When should Mestranol and Norethindrone not to be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with breast cancer, uterine cancer or unexplained vaginal bleeding, stroke, blood clots, heart attack or chest pain, liver impairment, hypersensitivity and pregnancy.

What is the dosage of Mestranol and Norethindrone ?

For a 28 day package, one tablet is taken daily for 28 days and a new package begun on the following day. For a 21-day package, one tablet is taken daily for 21 days followed by 7 days with no medication.

How should Mestranol and Norethindrone be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth as directed by your physician.

What are the warnings and precautions for Mestranol and Norethindrone ?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, gallbladder disease, epilepsy, irregular menstrual periods, liver or kidney impairment, obesity, smokers, varicose veins, women aged over 35 years, children and breastfeeding.
* Avoid smoking while taking this medication; otherwise it may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots and high blood pressure.
* Do not miss the dosage.
* Avoid sharing of injection or needles with others.


What are the side effects of Mestranol and Norethindrone ?

Most Common- Nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, vaginal infection, spotting, weight changes and headache.
Genitourinary- Irregular periods.
Central Nervous System - Breast enlargement, decreased sex drive, vaginal itching or discharge, depression, confusion, headache, weakness, speech disorder, nervousness, dizziness and tiredness.
Gastrointestinal- Stomach cramps, bloating and loss of appetite.
Miscellaneous- Jaundice, dark urine, shoulder pain and sweating.

* Monitor blood sugar level regularly while taking this medication.
