Why is Ergometrine Prescribed? (Indications)


This medication is an ergot alkaloid, prescribed for post-partum and uterine bleeding. It helps the uterus contract back and prevents bleeding after childbirth.

When should Ergometrine not to be taken? (Contraindications)


Contraindicated in patients with vascular disease, psychosis, 1st and 2nd stage of labor, high blood pressure, during pregnancy and spontaneous abortion.

What is the dosage of Ergometrine?


Adult: Oral- 0.2-0.4 mg 2-4 times/day. Max duration: 1 week postpartum.
IV- Excessive uterine bleeding- 200 mcg over at least 1 min, followed by oral doses of 200-400 mcg 2-4 times/day.

How should Ergometrine be taken?


It comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

What are the warnings and precautions for Ergometrine?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of breech and abnormal fetal presentation, high blood pressure, chronic anemia, heart, liver, kidney, respiratory impairment, breastfeeding and decreased calcium in blood.
* Monitor blood pressure, pulse and uterine response while taking this medication.


What are the side effects of Ergometrine?

Gastrointestinal- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Central Nervous System- Headache and dizziness.
Heart- Chest pain, palpitation, high blood pressure, shock and abnormal heart rhythm.
ENT- Ringing in the ear.
Skin- Rashes.


What are the other precautions for Ergometrine?

*Avoid excess dosage.

What are the storage conditions for Ergometrine?

Injection: Store it in refrigerator (2-8�C), Oral: Store it at controlled room temperature (25�C).
