According to a recent analysis by Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Sick subway passengers who faint from dizziness due to excessive dieting are among the top causes, after the track works and signal problems, for the delay in US subway.

Asim Nelson, a transit emergency medical technician said that Subway-Disruptions Analysis of MTA statistics, taken between October 2005 and October 2006, shows that fainting dieters topped the "sick customer" list. Nelson is part of the MTA's "sick Customer Response Program," which consists of emergency medical technicians and registered nurses.

"Not eating for three or four days, you are going to go down and if you don't eat for 12 hours, you are going to get weak." – He added.

The newspaper Metro had earlier reported in its 2005 – article, reported the notion that fainting dieters are causing transit delays.

Though the agency did not keep any official record of the nature of each passenger's illness, the paper said that an average of 395 delays each month are caused by the sick customers. Other reasons for fainting would be due to flu symptoms, anxiety attacks, hangovers, heat exhaustion etc., - Nelson added.
