Uganda's health ministry on Thursday announced it had contained a mysterious fever that killed 14 people and infected 33 others in the past three weeks.

Director of Medical Services Sam Zaramba said no new cases had been reported in the past two days and those infected were responding to treatment.

Laboratory tests had ruled out the deadly haemorrhagic Marburg fever, although samples sent to the United States to determine the cause of the infection were pending.

"It was some sort of a viral infection, but we are yet to know exactly what it was," Zaramba said.

The outbreak was reported a week ago in areas bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.
