The family members have blamed the doctors that a kidney was removed from her without their knowledge. The girl died in pain at a private nursing home after her belly swelled rapidly.

Parents found out about her missing kidney only after she was admitted to the nursing home, where her condition deteriorated. Doctors at the hospital informed the parents that one of her kidneys had been removed.

Family members Tuesday protested outside the office of district authorities, demanding that a murder case be registered against the principal of the government medical college, J.P. Kaur Shergill, and other doctors who had operated upon Sonia and removed her kidney recently.

Shergill and another doctor, who performed the operation, were suspended last week by medical education and research minister Tikshan Sud. A probe panel of senior doctors was set up to investigate the matter.

"My child was killed by these doctors. They should be punished for this," an inconsolable Shridhar Dubey, father of the girl said.

He claimed that the doctors who operated upon his daughter never obtained the mandatory permission to remove her kidney.

The doctors who operated upon the girl defended themselves saying that the kidney had to be removed to save the child from death at that time. They claimed that all norms and regulations were followed. A tumour had damaged a kidney and partially affected another.

The incident has once again brought back the painful memories of the kidney scam that rocked the city five years ago in which private doctors and hospitals were running a racket in removing kidneys. The matter is pending in court.

However, doctors in the medical college alleged that the episode of the girl's operation was being blown out of proportion owing to professional rivalry within their fraternity.
