The Watford Borough Council has decided to ban parents from public playgrounds for kids unless they have undergone mandatory criminal checks.

the Council is facing a barrage of protests, but has revealed that it is only following the policy of the government. The row is likely to reflect badly on the Government's new national anti-paedophile database.

"Safeguarding the children and young people who use the site is one of our top priorities," a council note said. "Due to Ofsted regulations we have a responsibility to ensure that every authorised adult who enters our site is properly vetted and given a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check by Watford Borough Council."

However spokeswoman for Ofsted disputed these statements, saying the organization would never insist that parents be accompanied by staff members to watch their kids play. "Many settings operate very well with parents and carers present, and indeed this can be an important part of young children settling somewhere new," she added.
