As he probed further, Dr Hans Asperger also found that the families of his subjects showed similar traits, which were beautifully honed over the years and did not pose a problem to them. He has left an optimistic note in his findings of the power of encouragement, support and the right intervention which could impact victims’ lives positively.
Children with Asperger’s syndrome fare far better than those with other pervasive developmental disorders.Although they have the potential to grow into independent adults, they may continue to display symptoms that are characteristic of the syndrome.
With consistent and effective treatment, children suffering from AS can learn to cope with their disabilities; nevertheless social interaction and and personal relationships continues to overwhelm them.
With continuous encouragement and support, AS adults can handle regular jobs and maintain an independent life.
There is lot of research being sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH) regarding Asperger’s Syndrome and the effectiveness of certain treatments on the patients. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies are being done to detect the abnormalities of certain brain parts and to understand how these abnormalities affect brain functioning.
Clinical trials to study the impact of certain anti-depressants on the AS patients are also being carried out.
