World's First IVF Baby Turns 30

The first ever IVF baby born in the world turns 30 this month. Louise Brown has come a long way since 1978 and so has the technique through which she was born.

Fertility pioneers Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards are responsible for bringing much joy to childless couples over the years. Today some three million babies have been delivered by the IVF technique.

Today Louise Brown has a son of her own, but that does not erase memories of how she was the center of media attention during her childhood. "When I was growing up they would ask things like how do you fit in a test tube and things like that!" she told the BBC.

"It's quite scary to think I'm the first of them all, but it's also a nice feeling that perhaps if I hadn't been born then all those people wouldn't be here, and IVF has helped so many couples."

Patrick Steptoe is no longer here as he passed away in 1988, but Prof Edwards remembers the year very clearly. He also feels the NHS should make IVF available for all couples.
