The culprit behind childhood obesity is getting all the more evident after this pathbreaking study. Overeating and not lack of exercise, is known to cause obesity in children accoding to the study.

This study is slotted as the first absolute study on this skyrocketing trend of childhood obesity, which is perhaps a reminder to the government to do something about the type of food advertisments targeting children.

Nearly 5,407 students from 90 public schools in NSW partcipated in the study initiated by the state government which questions the prevailing myth that sedentary lifestyle and reduced physical activity, contributed to childhood obesity. It was observed, that though the children were more physically active than the children in the 1990’s , yet were piling on the pounds.

The University of sydney Doctor , Micheal Booth who conducted the survey found that statistics from 1997 till 2004, showed an upward trend in the obesity rates among boys and girls. In the words of Dr booth “This flies in the face of what I think was an urban myth that children were inactive.Like everyone else, I believed the urban myth."
