Cereal Killers: Is the Loaded Breakfast Bowl Really Healthy?

Maybe this piece of news can give us a peek into why kids today are showing a tendency of gaining excessive weight. The piling of calories starts off with the breakfast cereal, which researchers find are loaded with sugar, akin to the sugar content of chocolates. While parents might just wince at the idea of doling out a bar of chocolate to their kids for breakfast, eating several helpings of cereals may be as bad as eating many chocolates at a time.

Motivated to get to the bottom of the cereal bowl, and analyze its true sugar content, researchers examined some of the most popular brands of cereals. The findings of the investigators about some of the trusted brands revealed that a 50 gm serving of Kellogg's Froot Loops contains 22.5 grams of sugar alike a dark chocolate Kit Kat bar. Nestle Nesquick contained 23.3 grams of sugar, close to a Twix candy bar. Post's Sugar Crisps cereal had more than 26.6 grams of sugar.

It is not healthy to start the first meal of the day feasting on sugar, as it creates an urge to eat more throughout the day. This could result in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in children, as they grow older. The foods that are high on fructose and low on fiber actually damage the liver, raising the insulin levels in the body.

Researchers recommend a diet rich in fiber that promotes learning as well as helps in keeping the children healthy.
