Delhi High Court Stays Venugopal's Removal

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 7 2006 9:34 AM

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Dr. P. Venugopal won a reprieve on Friday when the Delhi High Court stayed a resolution of the Institute's Governing Body recommending his sacking.

'The decision of the AIIMS governing body, recommending the termination of Venugopal's services, is stayed and the government is restrained from taking any decision on the recommendation,' Justice Anil Kumar said in his order.

He issued notices to the central government, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss as well as the institute.

Venugopal, a renowned cardiologist, moved the court following the governing body decision Wednesday recommending his removal on charges of violating the code of conduct. The matter will come up for further hearing next month.

The Wednesday decision triggered a flash strike by AIIMS doctors and staff, paralyzing medical services.
