UK Kids Grappling With Diabetes

by Rajshri on Jun 23 2008 1:58 PM

According to Diabetes UK the country is struggling to tackle the scrounge of type 1 diabetes in kids. The charity said that NHS must take action to rectify this situation.

"The number of children being rushed to A&E with such a life-threatening complication (as DKA) is shocking," said Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK. "With increased awareness and education and more investment from the NHS in special paediatric diabetes care, the number of emergency admissions could be dramatically reduced."

The data also reveals that some 3,300 children in England were admitted to hospital between April 2006 and March 2007 with diabetes. Furthermore of the 12,326 emergency admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) 25 percent were children or young people under 18.

The report also added that the number of hospital admissions of children with diabetes increased by 8% since last year.
