Parents are usually concerned their children may gain weight after being away from home for the first time during college. Having access to sugary drinks and calorie laden foods from cafeterias is a cause of concern as it may lead to weight gain.

Being away at college is not the cause of weight gain in children, the study found. Statistics show that less than 10 percent of college freshman gain 15 pounds.

Infact, 25 percent freshmen knocked off a few pounds and the average person piled on 1.5 pounds a year during each of the first four years after college.
