Two teenage girls were jailed for killing a disabled Sydney cabbie last January. The driver died of a heart attack after he was beaten up by the two fourteen year olds. The two girls, cousins pleaded guilty to the manslaughter and were jailed for six years.
The taxi driver Youbert Hormozi, 53’s family said that the family of the girls too deserved to be in prison. Mr. Hormozi's former wife Anna and daughter Melin.were overcome with emotion after Supreme Court Justice Peter McClellan ordered the killers to serve minimum three-and-a-half years.
Since the girls are already serving sentence they will be eligible for parole in August 2009.
Mrs. Hormozi said that the girls were violent animals that need to be caged. The state opposition has is thinking of re-appeal for a harsher sentence to the girls.
On the fateful day the girls had been out drinking and smoking Marijuana at 2 in the morning. They took Mr. Hormozi's taxi in southwest Sydney. After refusing to pay the fare they punched and kicked the driver, whose left arm had been paralyzed by a stroke. The pair fled in Mr. Hormozi's stolen taxi and left the injured father of two in a Canley Heights street, where he died.
Justice McClellan declared “Mr. Hormozi had coronary disease and the attack was "sufficient to traumatize him and trigger the heart attack from which he died”. And he added “alcohol and drugs are not a license for committing crime”.
