TB Bacterium More Common Than Thought

by Rajshri on Jan 7 2010 9:40 PM

Even as the World Health Organization (WHO) continues its struggle in eradicating tuberculosis across the globe, a new report has revealed that more than two billion people are carrying the bacterium that causes the disease.

India has the largest number of registered TB cases followed closely by China. The Chinese government is battling hard against a number of drug-resistant forms of the disease which are far more expensive to treat.

While many countries are offering TB medication free of cost, patients suffering from drug resistant forms have to experience a number of side effects as well. China accounts for more than 4.5 million cases with 1.4 million new cases being registered every year.

According to the report, more than 1.8 million people died due to the disease last year, making it the seventh highest cause of mortality in poor countries.
