Study Says Mental Illness Among College Students on the Rise in US

The instances of severe mental illness among college students is steadily rising, a new study conducted by a group of American researchers reveals.

According to the report, presented during the American Psychological Association annual meeting on Thursday, around 93 percent of students were found to be suffering from at least one mental disorder in 1998 with the number rising to 96 percent in August 2009.

The number of students who were on psychiatric medications more than doubled from 11 percent to 24 percent during the same period while students suffering from at least moderate depression rose from 34 percent to 41 percent.

"There are some students who are outliers and they have some difficulty in some areas. And these relatively few students that present in significant distress seem to have increased to a greater percentage than they were a decade ago", lead researcher John Guthman of Hofstra University said.
