 Stem Cells Have the Potential to Repair Nerve Damage in Ears

Bryon Coleman, an Aussie researcher at the Eye and Ear Hospital has revealed that she is using stem cells to repair damaged nerves in the ear that cause deafness.

The Age reported in its Monday edition that Dr Coleman feels stem cells can repair damaged nerves which travel from the brain to the ear. Deaf people may be able to hear if this method is successful.

"Fifty years down the track this might be one of many techniques -- we might not even need a cochlear implant," the doctor told The Age. "We have transplanted stem cells into the (inner ear) and they survive, but we need to know if they work."
