Special Glasses may Improve Sleep Patterns, Reduce ADHD Symptoms

by VR Sreeraman on Nov 13 2007 6:58 PM

Scientists at John Carroll University have created special glasses that may help reduce ADHD symptoms and improve sleep patterns among individuals with sleep disorders by blocking blue light.

The researchers say that putting on the glasses a couple of hours before going to bed advances the circadian rhythm of a person, thereby bringing about improvement in ADHD symptoms and sleep disorders.

The blue rays cause a delay in the start of the flow of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Blocking these rays leads to the earlier release of melatonin, which in turn reduces ADHD symptoms significantly.

Providing better sleep, avoiding postpartum depression, preventing Seasonal Affective Disorder, and reducing the risk of cancer are the major benefits that the new glasses may provide.

The researchers have also developed a kind of light bulbs with coatings that block the blue light.

Rather than putting on the glasses, a person may also chose to block the blue rays by switching on the bulbs with special filters.
