School Nurses may be Able to Tackle Diabetes in Children, Study Says

Researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, Houston are suggesting that school nurses can play an important role in tackling diabetes in kids.

The researchers said that nurse-supervised blood sugar monitoring, insulin injections at lunch and periodic insulin dose adjustment as needed during school were able to control blood sugar in a significant manner in adolescents who had type 1, or "insulin dependent," diabetes.

School nurses "serve as an important resource, caring for the children's medical needs when at school. Previous studies show that they make a difference in children with asthma," the authors write, adding that a school nurse-led diabetes control program may be an "effective short-term strategy for managing children and adolescents with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus."

The details appear in the Journal of Pediatrics.
