
A new report titled "The Asian Audit" has said that the rates of hip fractures in Asia has risen alarmingly over the past 30 years and by 2050 half of all the hip fractures in the world are expected to occur here.
According to the report the number of hip fractures has risen by almost 300 percent in the region with the rise being sharpest in Singapore which has seen the number of cases jump by almost 500 percent.
China seems to harbor the highest number of patients with more than 6.87 lakh cases of hip fractures while India is a close second with 4.4 lakh cases. Authors Dr Ambrish Mithal, president of the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research and Dr Vibha Dhingra say that the number of fractures in Hong Kong increased by 300% and by 500% in Singapore over the last 40 years.
