China seems to harbor the highest number of patients with more than 6.87 lakh cases of hip fractures while India is a close second with 4.4 lakh cases. Authors Dr Ambrish Mithal, president of the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research and Dr Vibha Dhingra say that the number of fractures in Hong Kong increased by 300% and by 500% in Singapore over the last 40 years.

"Families must ensure that their children consume a lot of dairy products like milk and play in the sun. Bones absorb calcium naturally till the age of 20. Because vitamin D deficiency is rampant in children, the government should start a Vitamin D supplementation programme nationally," Dr Mittal told the Times of India.
