Doctors in Britain have managed to treat a rare case of brain condition in a 17-year old girl by attaching a tube in her brain which transfers spinal fluid directly to the stomach and thereby relieving her from severe migraines. Bradford resident Melissa Peacock was diagnosed with a rare condition of intracranial hypertension at the age of nine years where in the spinal fluid would collect in her brain, pushing it down and causing severe migraines which often caused blurring of her vision.
Doctors initially assumed that it would take a simple surgery to drain out the fluid. However the fluid continued to collect and after nine unsuccessful attempts, the doctors performed an unusual surgery and attached a tube in her brain which directly transferred the excess spinal fluid into the stomach where it is digested along with her food.
Melissa said that the surgery has proved to be very effective for her even though some of her friends feel weird that she digests her spinal fluid. “My friends think the fact that I digest fluid from my brain is a bit weird - but my quality of life is so much better since I had the shunt put in place, I don't care”, she said.
