by Medindia Content Team on May 28 2006 2:11 PM

One student attempted suicide by immolation at the Ramlila grounds in New Delhi at a protest rally against the quota for OBCs in higher institutions. The student had 15 percent burns and was admitted at the LNJP hospital.

Meanwhile IIT students in Delhi and Kanpur are to go at a hunger strike on Sunday. JNU students are to join them. Meanwhile the Union Health Ministry has issued orders to nine central medical institutions to increase the number of seats and send in their proposals by June 15.

'We have moved into action and kept our word. And I have written to all institutes, AIIMS and the others, to raise seats,' said PK Hota, Health Secretary, Health Ministry. 'The crisis has helped us in one way. The PM has said resources will not be a problem. The matter has been discussed with the Planning Commission also I have been told, so there's going to be a substantial expansion of medical seats in UG/PG/specialty courses.'

If these proposals are undertaken then it could result in 6000 additional seats.
