Prevalence of Anemia an Indicator to the Burden of Tropical Disease.

by Medindia Content Team on Aug 16 2007 5:13 PM

According to a press release researchers feel that anemia could be used to evaluate the burden and control of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) such as such as schistosomiasis and intestinal worms.

The study conducted by Imelda Bates (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK) and colleagues suggest since the incidence of anemia is objective and quantifiable it is easy to ascertain if the community is plagued with anemia. In many cases of NTD anemia is a major complication. Anemia can detected even in the most remote of places and it changes in a predictable fashion with alterations in the burden of NTDs).
