More than a quarter of postmenopausal women who have type II diabetes are at a high risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, a new study published in the British Journal of Cancer reveals. Researchers at International Prevention Research Institute (i-PRI) analyzed more than 40 different studies looking into the link between breast cancer and diabetes.
The researchers studied over 56,000 breast cancer cases and found that more than 27 percent of post menopausal women who have type II diabetes were likely to develop breast cancer.
“Our study found a significantly increased risk of breast cancer in women who had diabetes, which was restricted to those of post-menopausal age. We don’t yet know the mechanisms behind why type II diabetes might increase the risk of breast cancer”, lead researcher Professor Peter Boyle said.
