PCB Conducts Anti-doping Tests for Shoaib, Asif

Pakistani fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, have undergone fresh doping tests ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup to be played in South Africa in September.

According to a spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the board has carried out doping tests on the 30 players shortlisted for the inaugural World Cup of the shortest version of the game.

"All the 30 players announced for the Twenty20 World Cup have been tested with the exception of Younis Khan, Yasir Arafat and Danish Kaneria who are playing county in England," the Daily Times quoted the spokesman, as saying.

The doping tests assume significance as both Shoaib and Asif were tested positive for taking banned steroid nandrolone in September last year before the ICC Champions Trophy in India.

The bowling due were initially banned by a PCB drugs inquiry panel, but then cleared by an appeals committee. Later in December, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) challenged the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

But on July 2 this year, the CAS ruling that it has no jurisdiction to take up the appeal filed by the WADA, saying the plea was "inadmissible," as there is no specific agreement between the parties to allow it to rule on the merits of this particular dispute.
