Panic has gripped villages in Orissa's Jagatsinghpur district after the mosquito-borne dengue virus was detected in a few villagers. Nearly 300 people have reportedly been suffering from high fever for the past 10 days.
The dengue virus was detected in patients in Nandigram village in Jagatsinghpur, district chief medical officer Sukadev Sethy told IANS. Jagatsinghpur is about 120 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
A medical team visited the village and has started treatment. It collected 12 blood samples from patients and sent them to Regional Medical Research Centre in Bhubaneswar. Their report, however, is awaited.
"We have deputed a medical team, provided mosquito nets and medicines to the villagers. We have also distributed leaflets to create awareness," he said.
