No Need for Antibiotics for Ear Infections in Kids

The Canadian Pediatric Society has recommended that there is no need for routine antibiotics for ear infections in kids. Dr. Joan Robinson, author of the statement, said that some infections are actually caused by viruses and do not respond to antibiotics.

"Overuse of antibiotics is leading to resistance and the day may come when we no longer have oral antibiotics available for treatment of common infections," Robinson said. Almost all kids suffer from ear infection by the age of five and usually develop them on the third day of suffering from a bout of cold.

Some symptoms include irritability, fever, sleeplessness and tugging the ears.

The society recommended some measures like breastfeeding newborns, immunizing children with the influenza and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke as some ways to prevent ear infections.

The full report is published this week in the journal Paediatrics & Child Health.
