Modern Man Attracted to Intelligence Rather Than Good Looks in Women

While the general perception is that men prefer women who are good looking or are good cooks, a new study published in the journal Psychological Science reveals that modern man is attracted to a woman who is intelligent and not just pretty. The study was conducted by researchers at York University who surveyed more than 12,000 people across 30 countries. The researchers were looking into the traits that are viewed as attractive by the opposite sex and found that along with modern men’s changing preference, even women are moving away from the traditional view point of preferring men who have a fat wallet.

The researchers said that with the gender gap in western countries narrowing down, both men and women are looking beyond the traditional traits of beauty and wealth when selecting their partners. While men prefer their women to be intelligent, women are attracted towards men who take care of their appearance.

“We found that in societies like Britain, or especially Scandinavia, men place increasing value on other qualities, like intelligence, rather than curvy figures or skill at cooking. Men can relax about having to build up wealth but may benefit from looking after their looks a little more”, lead researcher Dr Marcel Zentner said.
