Medicare Dental Scheme Not Working Properly

by Rajshri on Mar 13 2010 9:39 PM

The Australian government has come under heavy fire from health experts who have criticized the administration over its inability to properly employ the Medicare dental scheme.

A number of dental experts have blamed the government over its refusal to properly advertise the rules of the scheme, leading to some dentists taking advantage of the ignorance by advertising the scheme among their patients even when the doctors are aware that they do not qualify.

The government has twice tried to scrap the scheme in the parliament but its proposal was rejected both the times by the senate. While health experts are criticizing the government over how the scheme is being employed, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said that the program was poorly framed and should be scrapped for a more meaningful and targeted program.

However the Association for the Promotion of Dental Health’s Professor Hans Zoellner said that rather than scrapping the program, the government should regulate it responsibly. “The Government really has an important role to regulate the scheme but instead of regulating dental Mendicare, the Government has simply refused to even look at it”, she said.
