Irresponsible Families To Be Monitored Round the Clock In UK

by Gopalan on Jul 28 2009 10:22 AM

The British government is to put the more irresponsible families under CCTV supervision in their homes – just to ensure their children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals. Private security guards will also be sent round to carry out home checks, while parents will be given help to combat drug and alcohol addiction, Children’s Secretary Ed Balls says.

As per the £400million plans announced, the problem families will be under 24-hour CCTV surveillance.

Around 2,000 families have already gone through such Family Intervention Projects so far. Now the government wants to bring 20,000 more of them under the ambitious scheme in the next two years, hoping that move will reduce the number of youngsters who get drawn into crime because of their chaotic family lives.

Family breakdown, child abuse and knife crimes are among the major concerns in the UK these days.

The media repeatedly highlights stories of neglected children, rotting in their own excrement, scrounging the bins for food, starving to death or even beaten to death by live-in partners of single moms.

The Labour government, in its last days, seems to be making a show of its determination to tackle the burgeoning crisis head on.

Mr. Balls said: “This is pretty tough and non-negotiable support for families to get to the root of the problem. There should be Family Intervention Projects in every local authority area because every area has families that need support.”

But Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: “This is all much too little, much too late.

“This Government has been in power for more than a decade during which time anti-social behaviour, family breakdown and problems like alcohol abuse and truancy have just got worse and worse.”

Yet others dismissed the whole scheme as a gimmick and said it would not work, but merely become a huge drain on the exchequer.
