Indian Police on Wild Goose Chase in Twin Murder Case, Key Suspect Giving Evasive Answers

Indian police seems lost in a wild goose chase in the twin murder case in the national capital of New Delhi. Leading dentist Rajesh Talwar, suspected of killing his daughter and domestic help, is not co-operating in investigations, federal police say.

Dr.Talwar has been in custody for 12 days now, still there seems to be no breakthrough.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), told the court Tuesday that Talwar was not co-operating and wanted two more days of custody.

Talwar was brought to the court of Special Judicial Magistrate Sapna Mishra under heavy security. Public prosecutor Suresh Batra sought an extension of remand on three grounds: shortage of time, his uncooperative attitude, and his evasive answers.

The court did allow the CBI to grill Talwar for two more days, but when the suspect is not co-operating, there is little the investigating agency could do.

Aarushi, a class 9 student of Delhi Public School (Noida) was found dead with her throat slit in her family's Jal Vayu Vihar apartment on May 16. The police initially named domestic help Hemraj as the prime accused but his own dead body was found on the building's terrace the next day.

Aarushi's dentist father Rajesh Talwar was arrested on May 23. The police claimed he killed Aarushi in a fit of rage as he objected to her closeness to Hemraj, but the family has strenously denied the police allegations.

Initially there was some support among the local community for the doctor. He was being persecuted, they charged, though nobody could explain why he should be targeted.

For that matter even Mrs.Nupur Talwar who has rallied behind her husband would not say who else could have committed the murders.

She has also been making contradictory statements as to when she discovered the body. Nor would she say how come they themselves did not discover the body of Hemraj lying on the terrace for one whole day.

The Talwars had alerted the police on the body while on their way to the holy town of Haridwar to immerse the ashes of their dead daughter.

There was some outrage over some statements made by UP state police – which initially was handling the case – on the 14-year-old Arushi’s ‘affairs.’ It was character assassination, women activists screamed.

It was in such circumstances the case was handed over to CBI, India’s premier investigating agency.

Those who were railing at the UP police have now clammed up when the CBI is virtually repeating all the allegations made by the former.
