The Allahabad High Court today directed Uttar Pradesh government to stop functioning of all but one medical colleges in the state imparting education in Indian Medicine.
The court asked the state government not to continue with counselling and admission process in these colleges.The order was passed by Justice Sunil Ambawani on a contempt petition filed by one Rajesh Kumar of Varanasi seeking ban on quacks in the state.
However, the court made it clear that the state government will be free to seek recognition from the Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) or even seek provisional/temporary recognition if it is permissible under the regulations framed by the council for running the course and for recounselling for admissions.
As soon as the state government obtains recognition for these colleges, the interim orders shall stand discharged, the court added.
The court observed that altogether 10 colleges in the state were providing degrees in Indian medicine (8 in Ayurveda and two in Unani).
These colleges, affiliated to various universities were providing BAMS and BUMS degrees recognised by the CCIM. However, after an inspection by the CCIM it was found that except Muzaffarnagar-based Ayurvedic Awam Unani college, none fulfilled the required norms and hence recognition of eight remianing colleges were withdrawn in 2000.
