Foster Care Children not receiving the Care They Need

Children in foster care are not getting adequate healthcare and assessments that they need warned pediatricians.

The Royal Australasian College of Physicians has reported that there are about 5,000 children in out-of-home care distributed throughout the country with several abused or neglected.

The doctors are now urging major changes to the health system such as ongoing checks as well as immunization records to ensure youngsters are not being left at risk. College spokesman, Dr John Clarkson, said that these children have physical and mental health needs, which have not been met. He said that we have an obligation to care for children, even if they are with foster families. He also stated the need for every child to have a health coordinator and future reviews to ensure they are safe and well.

Clarkson says more government resources need to be injected into providing regular health checks for foster children.
