Foot Damage Due to High Heels Requires £29 Million for Corrective Surgery

The damage to feet caused by wearing high heels is very serious and can result in massive costs, according to a new study. The overall cost of corrective surgery is almost £29 million on an annual basis.

"While we love our high heels, wearing them for prolonged periods is bad news for our health and wallets," said lead researcher Emma Supple, who is a consultant podiatrist on the NHS. "We need to mix and match our choice of footwear to allow our bodies time to recover."

The study, involving 1,000 women, estimates that bunion operations can cost up to £4,000 per surgery totaling a staggering £13.8 million over the year. Toe straightening surgery costs £1,200 per operation adding up another £10.4 million per year. Big toe joint replacement surgeries cost another £3.3 million.

The study also found that over 50% of women in Liverpool and Manchester wore high heels all through the week. Furthermore some 40% of women had experienced accidents because of heels with most of them twisting their ankles.
