Scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology conducted a study to evaluate the effects of a high intensity work out regime on women’s fertility.
Nearly 3000 women were part of the study between 1984 and 1986 and had to answer questions about frequency, duration and intensity of their fitness plans. Ten years later, the same women were asked about their pregnancies.Nearly 25% of those who exercised the most, could not conceive during their first attempt at conception and this might be a pointer to show that intense workouts at the gym may deprive the body of energy needed for a successful pregnancy.
Study leader Sigridur Lara Gudmundsdottir said, “We found two groups who experienced an increased risk of infertility. There were those who trained almost every day, and those who trained until completely exhausted. Those who did both had the highest risk of infertility.”
The risk of infertility increases three fold for those women who spend too much time at the gym, with younger women more prone to risks of infertility. Thankfully, the negative effects of super-women workouts were not permanent and most of the women in the study group did have children eventually.
