Doctor Faces Disbarment For Working In Multiple Hospitals

by Medindia Content Team on Jun 21 2006 8:09 PM

Dr Rajesh Dere, a forensic medicine lecturer faces disbarment from Medical Council of India (MCI) after it emerged that he was employed in two hospitals at the same time, which is against the rules of the MCI. Apparently Dere was working at KJ Somaiya Medical College and hiding his employment with Sion Hospital.

If he is debarred, then it will be a second one for him since he has already been debarred till July 31, 2007 for an earlier problem. He had been able to a get stay on the MCI decision from the Bombay High Court after citing a typographical error.

Last week that case was dismissed as neither Dere's lawyers nor MCI's lawyers turned up for the hearing. DNA has acquired proof of his employment in two places. But Dere has defended himself. “The Medical Ethics and Etiquette Rules 2002 does not prohibit anyone from getting employed in two places," he said. “I need to declare it only at the time of inspection and no such inspection was carried out at JJ Hospital."

Sion hospital dean ME Yeolekar said the matter had been referred to the Hospital's legal cell. “He has denied all allegations but we are awaiting the legal department’s opinion. We’ll have to look into the matter."
