Delhi High Court Blames Government 'Inaction' on Dengue Outbreak

by Medindia Content Team on Oct 7 2006 10:47 AM

The Delhi High Court has made no bones about the government's lackluster response to the dengue outbreak in the capital. The Central Government and the MCD have been ordered to file an affidavit within 7 days regarding this issue.

The National Dengue Action plan was provided Rs 11372 cr to take appropriate measures to prevent the dengue outbreak, but still nothing concrete seems to have been done. Despite Rs 21 cr being sanctioned to remedy an open drain behind AIIMS, the government has done precious little on a gaping problem.

It is estimated that above 3000 people in the country are in the grips of the dengue virus with 673 cases being from Delhi alone. Nearly 43 people in India have succumbed to the disease. Figures in Kerala are extremely high with 713 cases; 225 cases have been reported from Tamil Nadu, 59 from Karnataka and 226 in Maharashtra.
