Consuming naturally occurring compounds in cocoa could improve blood circulation, according to new research. It can also help blood flow// in menopausal women with high cholesterol. 'The totality of this research is impressive and gives us new insights into how cocoa flavanols may improve health in a variety of ways not previously known,' said Harold Schmitz, PhD, Chief Science Officer of Mars, Incorporated. 'This publication, resulting from the science presented at an international meeting convened last year in Lucerne, Switzerland, is exciting as it adds to the growing body of scientific research demonstrating that the consumption of flavanol-rich cocoa can potentially lead to a range of physiological benefits resulting from improved blood flow.' Mars, Incorporated has conducted research on cocoa components for the past 15 years. The researchers conducted studies in test tubes as well as on human subjects. Two new studies found that in elderly people flavanol-rich cocoa increased blood flow in the brain. Flavanol-rich cocoa also has the potential to decrease formation of blood clots.
