Chhattisgarh to Launch Polio Campaign for Laborer’s Kids

by VR Sreeraman on May 16 2007 9:32 AM

The Chhattisgarh government will launch a three-day polio immunization drive from May 20 with a special focus on the children of laborers to help the state get rid of polio disease completely.

"In a bid to make Chhattisgarh polio disease free, the government will immunize kids across the state in association with dozens of NGOs (non-government organizations) and private organizations under a special drive from May 20-22," an official statement said Wednesday.

"The special focus during the three-day mega polio campaign will be on the kids of daily wage earners," the statement added, claiming "the state has not registered even a single complaint of polio cases in the past four years."

On Sunday, officials will pick up kids for immunization from fixed centers besides public places like railway stations and bus stands. On the last two days, they will make door-to-door visits to ensure that not a single kid below five years is left out.

The government has sought help from locally elected representatives and NGOs to make the drive a success.
