Challenge on Drink-drive Test Fee in NZ

by Rajashri on Jul 18 2008 5:32 PM

Police practice of charging drink-drivers for their own blood tests is being challenged by a Christchurch lawyer in a case that High Court judge Christine French said has "significant ramifications".

Defence counsel Andrew Bailey feels that drivers who opt to have blood test taken by a doctor to measure their blood-alcohol level should not be shelling out the cost of the test as well as the set fee of $93. He argued that people convicted of drug dealing were not billed for surveillance charges and similarly these charges must be done away with.
