Beijing Pledges to Recycle Fifty Percent of Olympic Waste

by VR Sreeraman on Jul 27 2008 10:52 AM

Beijing has pledged to make 50 percent of the waste produced by its 31 Olympic venues useful after recycling.

According to a report in ENN (Environmental News Network), Beijing's 31 Olympic venues are expected to jointly produce some 14,000 tons of trash, including leftovers, paper, plastic bottles and medical waste.

In the tradition of past host countries, Beijing has pledged to make 50 percent of this waste useful after recycling.

Food waste must be removed from stadiums within four hours. Other trash will be gathered and transported to one of four sorting centers and processing plants.

The commission is also focusing on water recycling.

A sewage plant and two water recycling plants will treat the water and make it safe for reuse. The new measure will help the city save 30 million cubic meters of clean water per year.
