Benzoyl peroxide: Drug Used to Treat Mild to Moderate Acne for Patient Education


Benzoyl peroxide belongs to a class of medications called topical peroxides. It is known for its action against bacteria and to decrease inflammation. It also soften the skin and gets rid of the blemishes when applied externally to the skin.

Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen and it is the oxygen that kills the bacteria called propionibacterium acnes which is present in the acne lesion. Benzoyl peroxide should be used as directed by the physician.
