Indication :


Flucytosine is an antifungal drug.

Physiology :


Flucytosine is used in treatment of bone marrow suppression and infection with fungi.

Normal Values :


50-100 µg/ml (330-775 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


>125 µg/mL ( > 970 µmol/L)

Test Method :


High performance liquid chromotography(HPLC), Gas chromatography(GC), Mass spectrometry(MS).

Side effects :


Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headache. Rare but severe side effects include kidney failure, cardiac arrest, bone marrow suppression resulting in reduced blood counts, aplastic anemia where red blood cells are not produced, liver disease and skin reactions like photosensitivity and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
