Smokeless Tobacco

There are two types of smokeless tobacco - snuff and chewing tobacco.

Chewed tobacco The leaves are usually shredded, twisted or bricked and placed between the cheek and gum and then chewed with lime and it is the oldest way of consuming tobacco leaves. Smokeless tobacco is sometimes called "spit" or "spitting" tobacco because people spit out the tobacco juices and saliva that build up in the mouth.


Pan masala, or betel quid consists of tobacco, areca nuts and staked lime wrapped in a betel leaf. They can also contain other sweetenings and flavouring agents. Snuff is a kind of finely ground tobacco that often comes in teabag-like sachets that users "pinch" or "dip" between their lower lip and gum. It is also known as "Scotch Snuff", because of the scorching process used to dry the cured tobacco.
