Glossary

Rheumatoid factor - It is an auto- antibody that is usually present in the serum of people with rheumatoid arthritis.


HLA - Human Leukocyte Antigen predisposes for the development of the disease. It is a major set of same antigen in humans.

Deformity - Deformity is a major difference in shape of body or body part compared to the normal shape.

Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy is a treatment where, it restores, maintains and promotes the overall fitness and health.

Occupational Therapy - Occupational Therapy is a way of treating the patient to perform daily task in their living and working environment and to assist them to develop the skills to live independently, satisfying and productive lives.

Antigen - Antigen is a macromolecule that is recognized by antibodies or immune cells and can trigger an immune response. Antigen is a protein.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) -This is a kind of blood test to detect Inflammation.

Antibody - Antibody is a protein complex used by immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses. Each antibody recognizes a specific antigen unique to its target.

Hydrotherapy - It is the oldest form of medical treatment. It involves use of water for relieving pain and treating diseases.

Arthroscopy - It is detecting device, which evaluates the level of damage in the joints.

Synovium - It is a thin membrane lining the inside of joint capsule. It produces synovial fluid for lubrication and nourishment of joint cartilage.

Synovectomy - This surgical treatment involves removal of the inflamed synovium (lining of the joint).


Osteotomy - This is a surgical treatment where the affected bones are cut and removed.

Arthrodesis - This is a surgical operation done to fuse a joint.

Arthroplasty - This is a surgical construction of a new movable joint.

Rheumatology - It is a Medical specialty, which is concerned with diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) - It is arthritis in children less than 16years with no obvious cause.
